Beschreibung:
The present edited volume brings attention to the changes as well as continuities in the medialisation of contemporary Indian familial and romantic norms and images. The theme is approached both through its normative manifestation in the form of the official national discourse on ideals of family and parenthood, and through its non-normative forms such as documentaries and feature films. The analysis of the norms of manhood and fatherhood posits the contemporary gender mainstreaming policies as a tool of both legitimising the current Indian government, and consolidating the hegemonic patriarchal view on gender. Artificial Reproduction Technology and its social implications are approached through the analysis of documentaries and feature films, in which the persistent invisibility of surrogates and reproduction of essentialized and orientalized discourses are problematized. Film production also presents a basis for the analysis of familial depictions in contemporary Bollywood cinema, which brings attention to more banal, but nonetheless problematic dysfunctional aspects of familial relations. The concluding chapter looks at heterosexual premarital relations in North India through the lens of contemporary societal changes, which brought about changes not only in premarital relations, but also in the ideas about masculinity, femininity, middleclassness, and Indian modernity.
