Beschreibung:
There is growing evidence that the experience of racial discrimination can have a pervasive and devastating impact on the health and well-being of Black Women, Native American women, and Women of Color. The essays collected in this anthology demonstrate that gender and religious, cultural, and class background strongly influence how we experience illness and how we are treated within the health care system. This book locates health within the context of socio-economic realities and demonstrates that a good analysis of health care needs is based on a definition of health, which encompasses and incorporates the biological, socio-cultural, and psychological dimensions of womens lives. "Surviving in the Hour of Darkness" illustrates, through both critical and personal testimonials, the importance of integrating the physical, psychological, and cultural aspects of women's lives. It opens up a dialogue between women about addressing health issues and concerns collectively, and thus advancing the health and well-being of Indigenous and Women of Color communities. Table of contents: Nurses in resistance (Karen Flynn) * African Canadian Women resisting oppression: holistic self-healing approaches to mental health (Ingrid Waldron) * A community health centres response to violence against women in the context of Black Women and Women of Colour (Notisha Massaquoi) * Black Women's health in Nova Scotia (Wanda Thomas Bernard) * Mysogyny and mental illness (Carla R.
