Aristotle connects gender identity to the generative act in the most decisisve way. My essay tries to analyse the Aristotelian theory of procreation in all its complexity. This paradigmatic model of procreation is overshadowed by a production logic that postulates only one motive cause. This power is attributed to the male author whose intention can only be directed at the production of a son. The dream of personal immortality is also addressed: Socrates desires Socrates. The figure of the daughter contradicts this essential dynamic. The philosopher shrinks neither from the discrimination and traumatization of the female child nor from the expropriation of maternity. As she is only the supplier of the basic matter, contempt and fears of death are projected onto the mother. The agonistic metaphor of gender extends to the conception of an all-powerful prime mover versus an automaton. The male claim to power is legitimized by a progressive natural process whose prototypical configuration culminates in this very Aristotelian fathering act. Through the inscribing of this (socio-symbolic) design of male creativity in nature, it takes on the appearance of a universal pattern. | |
