Beschreibung:
The significance of the female gender as biological and social variable in etiology and maintenance of psychosomatic disturbances is discussed. The connotations linked to the perception that "a girl has been born" influence the psychosexual development of the child and thus possible pathological outcomes, such as disturbances of the body-image. Research on stressful life-events shows that individual coping-behaviour is influenced by support regarding the individual's position in a social hierarchy - women are more likely to hold the lower positions. One of the reasons for this is the continuing inequality of women in private and public life. Health risks directly linked wit the female reproductive potency are further discussed. The often unjustified medication of the female life cycle, such as (normo-gonodotrop) cycle-disturbances in adolescence, pregnancy-related problems or mild psychological reactions to menopause, put additional strains on women which may result in severe health-problems.
