Do contemorary theories of language and subjectivity hlep or hinder the feminist reader of past texts? That is, does reading from the inescapable perspective of the twentieth century necessarily impose present-day theoretical presuppositons on to a different past, therby eliminating historical difference? In the light of these questions the essay explores the consequences of using a deconstuctive methodology to analyse Mary Wollstonecraft's 'Vindication...' The essay locates oppositions of genre and, correspondingly, of gender at work in the 'Vindication': the literary is associated with the feminine, while reason and a plain-speaking philosophical prose is aligned with masculinity. Deconstruction, it is argued, enabels the reader to undo these oppositions and to reveal their radical instability... | |
