Many feminists have critiqued the "maleness" of reason, but it is not clear what the implications of this criticism are. Should feminists abandon reason and seek alternative modes of thought? Does it follow that women are less rational than men? Lloyd examines the way in which figurating reason as male operates in culture by taking up two issues: 1) the contrast between biological sex and gender and 2) the contrast between the literal and the figurative.
