| First Stoller's concept of gender identity is introduced. Then the author describes unconscious phantasies of men and women in which gender differentiation is reversed. This happens unconsciously in particular through the denial of the primal scene. In these unconscious phantasies people strive to restore the symbiotic existence with the mother which was destroyed through the discovery of gender difference. The emphasis of the paper is on female development. The author describes psychoanalytic theories of "normal" female development and unconscious (female) phantasies, in which these gender fixations are being reversed. On this background the inconsistencies of female gender identity are explained. | |
