| The encounter between self and other is the cultural primal scene of recognition and functions in two ways: as the recognition (or mis-recognition) of the other sex as well as of the other/foreign culture. The present study attempts to focus anew on this structural pattern in view of literary criticism and ethnology: as the anagnorisis-situation of the tragedy - discussed since Aristotele's poetics; as the first-contact-situation (encounter) in an ethnological context. Gender studies - particularly their decontructivist branch - have led to a fundamentally revisionist estimation of gender difference. In the sense of "differences within gender studies" the naturalisation of the dispositive of opposing gender roles has been undermined , replacing identity with deviation, opposition with difference. Taking the examples of Euripides', Grillparzer's and HansHenny Jahnn's "Medea"-dramas, the gender configuration will be newly investigated with regard to a recognition of the other and with regard to the violence such as mis/recognition may entail. | |
