Findings of the pilot of a British panel study are summarized. In seeking to explain why female students in higher education are outperforming males, a large database of information has been collected on their social, economic and psychological background, and their performance once at university. Preliminary findings suggest that the relatively enhanced performance of female students can be explained by their propensity to work harder and by their willingness to respond to the demands of the educational regime at university.
