Beschreibung:
This article discusses ongoing research on gender roles and the division of labor, specifically the procurement of food and raw materials and the manufacture and use of implements, during the Upper Paleolithic of Europe. The study includes a critical examination of the portrayal of prehistoric gender roles in German texts, illustrations and exhibitions and a re-evaluation of the ethnographic analogies that are commonly used in the reconstruction of prehistoric gender roles. Special attention is being paid to the use of plants, small animals, fish and insects in the diet and material culture of northern hunter and gatherer groups. This information is being used to re-examine popular beliefs about gender roles during the Upper Paleolithic and the manner in which these beliefs have biased previous archeological investigations. In addition, Upper Paleolithic artefacts are being analysed for evidence of possible gender-specific activities that have been neglected in earlier reconstructions of artefact use. Based on this research, new models of gender roles and the division of labor during the Upper Paleolithic of Europe will be developed and the consequences of these models for archeological investigations will be evaluated.
