In the 19th and the early 20th century, women's right of access to secondary and higher education could only be realized by their gaining admission to the existing institutions. the classic coeducation debate, therefore, focused on this issue. The new coeducation debate was launched when empirical studies showed that girls were treated differently from boys in schools, offering them less opportunities to advance academically and to build up self esteem. As a solution, segregation of female and male students at school and universities, was advocated. To investigate this question, a study of 9th and 10th grade female students at two secondary schools for girls and two comparable coeducational schools was conducted. Results showed that, while there were no differences between the two groups in socioeconomic criteria, in tested intelligende and in grades in mathematics, English and German, there were indeed significant differences in grades in history, chemistry and science. Between the two groups no difference could be found as to the majors they wanted to pursue at university after school. Girls from girls schools preferred to spend their leisure time in a more passive way (looking at TV, "being lazy", sleeping etx.) while there was a tendency of coeds towards sports and more active pastimes. Being at a girl's school had an isolataing influence with respect to contacts with boys. 82,9% of the girls from girls' schools would have prefered to go to a coeducative school, but 96,8% of the coeds mentioned that they would choose the same form of schooling again | |
