Beschreibung:
Although wives' and mothers' labour force participation in West Germany has increased markedly, empirical studies show no corresponding increase in men's participation in family work and practically no adjustment to dual-earner and single-parent family patterns by public services. Who, then, is taking care of the young, the sick and the elderly as more and more German women enter the labour market? Drawing on qualitative empirical research carried out in Bavaria, on the social construction of everyday life, the article discusses the division of labour between women of different generations, class backgrounds and ethnic and national origins. As more wives and mothers seek employment outside the home, a second pattern seems to be emerging: that of other women working in their homes, either as part of an informal support network or employed as cleaning women, child-minders, etc. Women's increasing labour market participation in Germany does not seem to be leading to greater equality between women and men, but to greater inequality between women, in a process that is interpreted as a modernization of patriarchal family structures.
