The main objective of this article is to analyse the representation of the myth of the "Polish Mother" in Polish cinema as a part and a special case of a general system of women#s representation. the myth of the Polish Mother, being an embodiment of an ideal femininity, is deeply rooted in the maternal discourse of Christian religions as wll as patriotic discourse developed in Polish Romanticisms. Through the analysis of its usage in the postwar Polish cinema, the article demonstrates how the myth was exploited by the directors connected with the Communist regime as well as those identifying with the opposition. It is argued that the myth of the Polish Mother has come to function as an "empty sign" that can be filled with an arbitrary ideological message | |
