| On March 18, 1996, threehundred people of West African origin occupied the church of Saint-Ambroise in the 11th district of Paris to call to the attention of public opinion of the dramatic situation in which they had been placed by certain laws passed in France. Since 1974 it has become more and more difficult to obtain an entry visa, or to obtain or to renew temporary residence permits. This arbitrary action reached its paroxysm with the entry into force of the 1993 Pasqua laws, which led to thousands of people having no residence documents. | |
