| The article examines the construction of femininity in Francis Ponge and challenges the common perception of him as an anti-essentialist writer. Attention is given to the equation of female and objet to Ponge's notion of the masculinity of literary creativity, and to the association of certain formal experiments with the feminine. there follows a critical analysis of Ponge's 1956 essay on the "Nus" of Jean FAutrier, which is an attempt to write the female body and introduce Fautrier's works. this work is seen as inadequate on both scores. It highlights Ponge's abiding inhibitions concerning the "brouillons" that constitute one of this literary forms | |
