| Droste-Hülshoff's innate humorous vein is uncovered by tracing and analyzing its manifold manifestations in her letters to family and friends. Letting the humor flow in a private and therefore harmless setting seems to have served, if subconsciously, as a strategy of survival for a woman writer painfully aware of, yet acquiescing to, the limitations imposed on her by decorum and convention. The discoveries made in her correspondence seem to warrant a re-evaluation of the nature and role of humorous elements in her poetic work. | |
