The aim of this article is to develop a framework for interpreting gender-specific inequalities. The prevailing class theories analyse these inequalities either as being dependent on class, that is, on occupational differences, or interpret women as constituting a class based on functional criteria, that is, domestic labor of the housewife or the structure of women's work outside the home. In the first approach, gender-based differences are perceived as derived; in the second, important criteria of social class are missing. On the other hand, it is also problematic to eliminate the concept of class and social categories on a general level from the analysis of social inequalities. A new approach to class analysis is suggested in which the process of class formation becomes the crucial element. It becomes an open empirical question, as to whether gender-specific forms of dicriminiation will lead to class formation. | |
