Feminism and nationalism are examined within a framework of a gendered cultural relativim. Gendered cultural relativism is a perspective that puts women at the center of knowledge but contextualizes women's experiences to their culture. Feminism and nationalism coincide under at least three kinds of social conditions: as historical national liberation social movements; as identity rights movements waging struggles internal to their societies; and as current decolonization movements against neo-colonialism. Historical cases of the melding of feminist and nationalist ideologies in comparative perspective are examines with an in-depth focus on one contemporary case in the Philippines. From these cases, themes emerge that demonstrate cross-cultural links between the various movements. In the recoceptualization of feminism as including some forms of nationalism, we can account for cultural values within feminist ideology. A gendered cultural relativism identified points of struggle between feminisms which can bring us closer to a universal feminist discourse without glossing over aspects of culture which make a universal feminism difficult | |
