Sine the 1991 Persian Gulf War, there has been a proliferation of texts claiming to "unveil", get behind, and expose the hidden world of Islamic women. this renewed popular appeal of travel writing co-exists with American military actions in the Middle East and points to a troubling relationship between narratives steretypically representing Muslim women and American foreign policy. Inheriting 19th-century travel writing's language of the civilizing mission, contemporary travel narratives represent Muslim women as in need of the West's governmental, military, and economic interventions. Like 19th-century narratives legitimating solonial rule, contemporary travel narratives enact a violence of penetration, a violence of representation, and a violence of cultural imposition | |
