Before her death in 1943 in Auschwitz Etty Hillesum kept a diary about her life in Holland under German occupation and her work as a secretary at the transit camp of Westerbork. The diary is both testament to the treatment of the Jews and also an implicit discussion of different forms of knowledge in the world. Hannah Arendt's comment about the "banality of evil" illuminates the dialogue about the Holocaust in Hillesum's diary in that banality is both a form of evil and, in the sense of the "ordinary", a form of resitance to it. Etty Hillesum moves from an identification with the rational and the intellectual to an acceptance and understanding of "natural" bonds and ties: a movement from culture to nature, and from male knowledge to female experience. | |
