This article discusses Harriet Martineau as the champion of two powerful and far from incongruous movements: the "Mesmeric Mania" and the mania for technological improvement, epitomized by the Victorian "Factory System". In her "Letters on Mesmerism" and later "Letters on the Laws of Man's Nature and Development", Martineau offers us a strikingly material and phenomenological vocabulary for "new" dram-like sensations. As part of a cohesive materialist program to extend the human faculties, her "Letters" situate the human body and spirit within a field of abstract and industrial forces. Indeed, this industrial metaphorics resonates closely with that employed by Martineau in various articles about manufacturing process written during the years of her greatest mesmeric enthusiasm. | |
