| The article argues that during the first half of the nineteenth century a specific concept of "women's literature" and of "a feminine mode of writing" was discursively constructed. The development of a national market for literature between 1820 and 1850 enabled men and women to earn a living by their pen. Since women were not formally excluded from this field, literature became the one profession to which white, middle-class men and women had equal access. The emerging discourse of gender difference in literature was a reaction to the fact that direct competition between women and men endangered the basic tenet of the symblic economy of American society at the time: the social assignment of separate spheres for men and women which followed from and was justified by the natural difference between them.
