Beschreibung:
This paper, which deals with two groups of women in Northumberland, England in the period 1880-1914—miners' wives and inshore fishermen's wives—reveals how different economic and social structures could affect the experience of women and could undermine existing gender ideologies. In addition, it shows the striking differences in the experiences of these two groups: one, miners' wives who were restricted to a non-economic, domestic role; the other, fishermen's wives who played an important role in the economic life of the family. Yet, it also illustrates how even the "domestic" miners' wives crossed gender lines: by forging a public role in the male preserve of politics. Thus, both groups of women had agency.
