| This article traces the career of Regina Jonas, (born 1902 in Berlin, died 1944 in Auschwitz) who became the first woman ordained as a Rabbi. Having completed her studies at the Hochschule fur die Wissenschaft des Judentum in 1930, she was ordained by Rabbi Max Dieneman in 1935 and worked as a religion teacher and chaplain in Jewish hospitals and senior citizen homes in Berlin. Her responsibilities and duties grew as Jewish life became increasingly constricted by the Nazi state. She survived in Theresienstadt from November 1942 until her final deportation to Auschwitz on October 12th 1944. | |
