| Early twentieth-century novels tend to establish a close link between the emotion of pity and sentimentality, on the one hand, and femininity, on the other. this essay traces the realtionship between pity and gender bakc to the eighteenth-century discourse on feelings. In their different approaches Shaftesbury, mandeville, and Rousseau shift the analysis of pity from the public to the private sphere. Pity is then inscribed into a gendered sentimental narrative. In Frances Burney's writings 'pity' develops into a discursive strategy: in her novels she uses pita against the grain of the sentimental tradition, while in her patient narratives she re-sentimentalises the emotion... | |
