| Felix Guattari's radicalization of subjectivity construction enables the acceptance of heterogeneous identities. In keeping with his model of subjectivity as a self-reproducing creative process, he positions adolescence in terms of a 'multivalent logic' of identity. Colman's essay uses this logic to examine a particular type of teen-girl cinema, arguing that teen subjectivity is not so much behaviour as the invention of potential mentalities, a production of undetermined and boundless thought. Adolescence is understood not as a developmental stage, but as a process of becoming. Becoming-adolescent can be defined as a passage-moment of freedom and change. Examples of self-producing teen subjectivities in the form of becomings are found in films by Catherine Hardwicke, Sadie Benning and Sofia Coppola. These films highlight moments of transition, bursts of subjectivity undermining traditional social roles and movements of transversal transformation. | |
