Beschreibung:
As far back as Middle Ages St Elisabeth of Hungary had an important place in French literature. Many "lives" are devoted to her, both by anonymous writers as well as poets like Rutebeuf. From the XV century St Elizabeth faded away somewhat from the thoughts of writers. However, the hagiographer monks preserved information about her, especially in the XVII century. It was not until the XIX century, with the coming of Lord Montalembert's masterwork in 1836, that a high level of interest was rediscovered. This work met with uncommon success and has been republished ever since. With the story's continuation many writers attempted to illustrate the subject, although without adding worthy data, with the exception of Jeanne Ancelet-Hustache who in 1947 published a worthy and well-documented account, although it didn't quite have the inspiration of Montalembert.
