Students (N = 78) and managers (N = 19) received job descriptions for a middle-management position. The job description stressed either stereotypically male leadership qualities (“traditional”) or, in addition, stereotypically female social competence (“feminized”). Participants were to judge the professional competence, social competence, and hirability of fictitious applicants on the basis of a CV and a cover letter. CVs implied professional competence, social competence, or both. In sum, those applicants who stressed their professional competence as well as their social competence were rated most hirable. The social competence of females high in professional competence was rated higher than the social competence of the respective males. There were some correlations of applicant ratings with explicit attitudes toward gender equality as well as with implicit gender stereotypes as measured with an Implicit Association Test | |
