Beschreibung:
Being based on a pragmatic view of the literary text, more precisely the analysis of the fictional discourse from the perspective of Grice’s Cooperation Principles and some issues of illocutionary force, this paper investigates Iris Murdoch’s search for meaning at the micro-level of discourse. Meaning is seen as resulting from a complex interplay of deceptive strategies in three novels of maturity: The Green Knight, Henry and Cato and The Sea, the Sea. The fictional games highlighted in the analysis enhance the complexity of the characters and of the technical achievement.
