This article considers how female masochism in the literary as well as filmic incarnations of Secretary radically contests singular narratives of women's sexual experience. Whilst various scholars, notably Eve Kokofsky Sedgwick and Carol Vance, have made seminal contributions to the theorisation of complex masochistic subjectivities, feminist literary approaches to this phenomenon frequently classify the experience as deploying a reductive 'subversive or hegemonic' structure of intellectual inquiry. This article seeks to counteract feminist dualisms by investing in a dialogic reading practice (Bakhtin) that positions the female masochistic subject as narratively complex: capable of inhabiting 'traumatic', 'empowered' and multiple other affective states not only in linear progression, but also simultaneously. | |
