This contribution examines Herta Müller’s novel Everything I Possess I Carry With Me (Atemschaukel, 2009), using a spatial approach. The import of memory for the perception of spaces is highlighted and exemplified by how the first-person narrator Leopold Auberg recounts and reflects upon his experiences – experiences that are linked to two places in particular, i.e. Hermannstadt/Transylvania and a labour camp in Ukraine. Additionally, the transit zone connecting these two places is explored. It is demonstrated that although the novel provides precise topographical markers, it also contains imagined spaces, namely when Leopold Auberg connects the two settings by conjuring up images of them. Moreover, this contribution investigates how by coining neologisms, Herta Müller created aesthetically condensed images of fear, silence und hunger – images that evoke a specific spatial structure. | |
