Nada's enduring significance lies in its ambiguity and in the difficulty in understanding Andrea's complex psychology. This article argues that the story explores what John W. Bowlby described as ‘disordered mourning’. Developing Barry Jordan's reading, Andrea fails to experience normal self-development owing to an incomplete mourning process following her mother's death; Andrea's grief is therefore fundamental. Writing and aesthetic contemplation comprise psychological defence mechanisms, behind which Andrea hides grief, and become ‘permanent diversions’ that deflect readers from her true source of suffering. Friendship modifies Andrea's defence mechanisms, her relationship with Ena only partially alleviating her grief. Andrea thus carries loss and disordered mourning with her to Madrid. | |
