| In publishing Opere di scultura e di plastica di Antonio Canova (1809, 1821–24), Isabella Teotochi Albrizzi, perhaps the best-known salon hostess in Italy, occupied the role of cultural mediator in the realm of art criticism. Her ability to do so was grounded in contemporary aesthetic theory and ideas of gender difference. Art was thought to instruct through sentiment, and women, deemed particularly sensitive, were well positioned to judge art's efficacy. Perceived as constituting an ‘ideal public’, Albrizzi drew on this cultural authority to propose herself in print as a model to be followed in matters of reception. | |
