This article analyzes culturalization from the perspective of conservative Islamic discourse on marriage, family, and sexuality as a transnational strategy of negotiating difference and recognition. It enquires into both, the historical and structural pre-conditions of this form of culturalization as well as into the effects it has on current debates on gender in the Arab region. The focus lies on selected publications by Yūsuf al-Qaraḍāwī (b. 1926), one of the most famous and prolific contemporary Muslim scholars. Particular attention is directed to the specific form of transnational connectivity of conservative Islamic positions. I argue that, in this case, culturalization as a more recent transnationally connected and legitimized strategy intersects with historically established forms of naturalization and sacralization. As a result, culturalization contributes to the de-historicizing of gender differences which are at the core of Islamic identity. Thus culturalization immunizes conservative Islamic ideology also against inner-Muslim critique. | |
