| After reviewing Seghers’s major principles for writing postwar literature published during her exile in Mexico City (1941-1947), the essay documents some “forgotten” texts she wrote in Berlin and the deletions mandated by her East German publisher Aufbau-Verlag. Seghers mentioned her thoughts about truth in writing and the responsibilities of a writer only to her foreign friends, and she chose not to include her unpublished or censored texts in the editions of her collected stories. In this respect, she (cautiously) became the writer her state wanted. | |
