| Most Americans today are well versed in the troubling state of our economy, in which the very rich have gotten richer and the rest of us have gotten poorer. This chapter presents a brief review of literature on older women in the workforce. It examines through interviews and content analysis the topic of older women needing to work past traditional retirement age because of economic need, such as personal and/or family support. The chapter then discusses the issues like declining health and other aging-related changes that affect continued employment for older women who are working, some of whom would prefer not to. The heart of the chapter consists of descriptions of how life goes for women who must work at low-income jobs in their older years. How do they manage? What are the positive aspects of their lives? What social and governmental assistance might make their lives better? | |
