This article uses the biography of Hugo Münsterberg (1863−1916) and his writings to chart issues of gender order and its changes during and before World War I. Born in Danzig in 1863, Hugo Münsterberg studied in Germany and then emigrated to the United States, where he made a career as a psychology professor atHarvard. In addition to his scholarly activities, he dealt extensively with the relationship between the United States and Germany and with the topic of women’s education in both countries. In several publications he analysed US society and the status and role of American women, to which he, asaGerman newcomer, felt particularly qualified. This article asks in what ways the topic of women’s education functioned as an arena for negotiating German- American relations. In addition, Münsterberg’s writings are analysed both as autobiographical practices and in the context of his performance as Scientific Persona. | |
